We had waited all day for the moment but we finally heard the doctor say those special words to us this evening: "It went great!".
He went into surgery around 1:30 PM and threw us an immediate loop as his blood pressure dipped fairly low, causing some concern with surgery plans. The team waited for a bit and they eventually rebounced, enabling surgery to proceed as planned. We received updates throughout afternoon from surgical team and finally heard the good news that surgery was successful and complete this evening. We were able to see him in person around 10:00 PM.
Researching the procedures in advance, we had prepared ourselves for the worst when seeing our little guy for the first time post surgery. However, our fears were immediately alleviated when we stepped foot into his room. He looked amazing, resting peacefully and ready to tackle another challenge! Incisions good, coloring good and stats good. We could not be any happier with the outcome.
With that said, we understand it is still a long journey and this is just the first step. But this was a big first step. Additionally, the doctor gave us confidence that after having a chance to explore during surgery today, he feels good about the potential for the next two surgeries ahead (procedures known as the Glenn and Fontan).
Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for the surgical team, nursing staff and rest of hospital staff. They overwhelmed us with support and truly made us feel that they were taking care of Hudson as if he was their own. These people are miracle workers and today definitely showed why. Thank you so much!
One last sidenote...Hudson's twin (the physician assistant who had same diagnosis as him) actually had the opportunity to scrub in and assist with his case. We are deeply appreciative for her inspiration and care for our son. She even had the team sign a red heart-shaped pillow with words of encouragement as a memento of his day. So awesome!
We are hopeful Hudson can recover over course of next week(s) and officially mark another item off his checklist. Day by day, task by task...this child continues to humble, inspire and amaze us!
We love you so much Hudson!
